Do You Like Marmite?

November 6th, 2009

It must be easy being a designer. I get told this a lot by friends & colleagues who look at what I am doing and say ‘why have you done that like that?’ or ’put that there’ or ‘you need to make that red’

A lot of you will be reading this and agree but consider this, it may be easy to ‘tweak’ these little bits, but before you can do this you have to come up with something to change. Put a blank piece of paper in front of someone and ask them to design a T-shirt or hoody and most will say ‘where do I start?’ Give them a finished garment and they will say I don’t like that bit!

Design isn’t a definitive science and that’s one of the great things about it. I think of it in terms of Marmite, for every one person who loves the finished design 5 will hate it and vice versa! Surely this is a positive because if we all liked exactly the same thing individuality would be nonexistent.

There is no great secret to design, no hidden grail which must be followed to create the perfect design but if people are talking about your work (or buying it) you are obviously doing a good job.

I would love to see some of your designs and ideas. It would be great to see how you have taken what I have created and made it your own but remember don’t take everything said to heart it’s all just a question of if you like marmite!
